Open cholecystectomy is done less frequently and is only done in emergencies. This usually means that the gallbladder is severely inflamed or infected. This is major surgery so will result in you being in the hospital for a week or so.
The surgical options for removing gallstones are not without risk. There have been several fatalities when it comes to gallstone surgery. There can also be non-fatal injuries like damage to the bile ducts.
